VET in Schools Success Story
Megan Storey undertook an Australian School-based Apprenticeship in Food Processing (Retail Baking – Combined). She started part-time work at Homestyle Bakery in Toowoomba when she was 13 and commenced her apprenticeship when she was 14 and still in Year Nine. Because Megan started so early, she completed the theory component of her apprenticeship while still at school and is expected to complete her practical requirements in 2008.
Megan’s employer was delighted with her progress over the four years of her School-based Apprenticeship. In addition to her acquisition of skills, she was praised highly for her work ethic, motivation and communication skills. Her school principal described Megan as having “total commitment to everything she does” and reported that her determination and enthusiasm meant that she excelled in all areas of school life.
Megan’s outstanding achievements were first recognised when, as a Year Ten student, she was awarded the highest prize for a School-based Apprentice at the regional Downs Industry Schools Co-operative Awards. She subsequently went on to receive an Australian Vocational Student Prize and a Prime Minister’s Award for Skills Excellence in 2007. Her achievements are particularly impressive given her young age and her chosen field being traditionally male dominated. In the future, Megan plans to open her own bakery in a country town, specialising in gourmet breads.
