Clay, Concrete and Stone Machine Operator

State/Territory Specific Information

Clay, concrete and stone machine operators use machines to manufacture bricks, tiles, pipes, building blocks, railway sleepers, structural beams, facing stones, porcelain, pottery ware and cast products.

Clay, concrete and stone machine operators may perform the following tasks:

  • select dies, cores, rings and cutter assemblies to install on machines
  • set controls on automatic cut-off knives or wires to cut extruded (pressed-out) clay
  • position stone on machines to be cut or worked
  • start machines and watch them to make sure equipment is functioning normally and that products meet requirements
  • start mixing machines and adjust valves to feed and control the flow of ingredients
  • operate material-spreading devices
  • spin pipe moulds to harden material and remove water
  • operate hand-held machines to polish and cut roughly hewn stone to finished condition
  • record causes and times of unscheduled stops due, for example, to a blockage in the machine
  • replace cutting wires
  • check products for defects
  • clean machinery and equipment.

Specialisations:

Clay, concrete and stone machine operators may specialise as brick, tile or pipe machine operators but generally operate a wide variety of equipment.

  • enjoy practical and manual work
  • good hand-eye coordination
  • enjoy working with machines
  • aptitude for reading instruments and gauges
  • willing to perform repetitive tasks
  • able to work in hot or dusty conditions.
