Wood Carver

State/Territory Specific Information

Wood carvers carve ornamental designs and patterns in wood for furniture, panelling and other decorative purposes, using hand tools and woodworking machines.

Wood carvers may perform the following tasks:

  • prepare detailed drawings of designs and trace them onto wood using templates and other copying devices
  • select and mark out suitable timber and form rough shapes using fretsaws, bandsaws, grinders, routers and belt sanders
  • clamp wood into jigs and carve by hand using gouges, paring knives, chisels with mallets, or power tools
  • sand the wood smooth with fine sandpaper or leave it rough to emphasise certain features
  • sharpen tools and keep them free from rust
  • use special paints, dyes and wood stain to highlight carvings
  • restore and copy antique ornaments and furniture.

Personal Requirements:

  • enjoy practical and manual work
  • some artistic ability
  • able to work neatly and accurately.
