Dental Therapist (TAS)
Education and Training:
To become a dental therapist you usually have to complete an associate degree or degree in oral health/dental therapy. Training courses provide dual training in dental therapy and dental hygiene. To get into the courses below you usually need to pass your TCE. Prerequisite subjects, or assumed knowledge, in one or more of English, mathematics, human biology, biology, chemistry and physics are normally required. Entry to degree courses is highly competitive, and you may need to sit selection tests and attend an interview. The various institutions have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements. Contact the institutions you are interested in for more information as requirements may change.

- Bachelor of Oral Health Sciences, 2.5 years full time
University of Adelaide - North Terrace and Somerton Park Campuses:
- Bachelor of Oral Health, 3 years full time
University of Melbourne - Parkville Campus:
- Bachelor of Oral Health, majoring in dental hygiene, 3 years full time
University of Queensland - St Lucia Campus:
- Bachelor of Applied Health Science (Oral Health), 3 years full time
University of Sydney - Cumberland, Sydney Dental Hospital and Westmead Campuses:
- Bachelor of Oral Health, 3 years full time
Additional Information:
Dental therapists must be registered with the Dental Registration Board of the state or territory in which they intend to work.

Employment Opportunities:
The public sector oral health services are the major employers of dental therapists. They work in fixed and mobile clinics promoting oral health care to children from pre-school to Year 10.
Prospects are good and career opportunities include progression to senior clinical and administrative positions coordinating health promotion activities in dental health services state-wide, and positions in research and teaching.
