Electronics Engineering Technician

State/Territory Specific Information

Electronics engineering technicians assist electronics engineers in electronic research, design, manufacture, operation and maintenance. They may work under the direction of electronics engineers, technologists and associates in all stages of planning, design, maintenance and production.

Electronics engineering technicians may perform the following tasks:

  • assemble circuitry for electronic equipment in accordance with technical manuals and engineer's instructions
  • test electronic instruments and equipment and repair or replace faulty parts
  • calibrate electronic measuring and indicating instruments according to established standards
  • install, test, repair and modify electronic equipment, including local area networks, following technical manuals or engineer's instructions.

Specialisations:

Electronics engineering technicians may specialise in fields such as aerial survey, communications engineering, electronics detail drafting, computer servicing, process control or maritime electronics. With experience and sometimes further study, it is possible to become an electronics engineering associate, technologist or professional engineer.

Electronics engineering technicians may work on radio and television transmitters, line communication cables, computers, signalling systems, automatic control equipment and local and wide area networks. They work in offices, technical laboratories or workshops, or outside on offshore oil rigs or other outdoor locations. They may work as team members with engineers, engineering associates and tradespeople, or on their own.
