Optometrist
Optometrists perform eye examinations and vision tests to determine the presence of visual and other problems relating to the eye, and prescribe lenses, other optical aids or therapy.
Optometrists may perform the following tasks:
- work out the nature and extent of vision problems and abnormalities by examining patients' eyes using a variety of instruments, techniques and tests
- correct vision defects by prescribing and dispensing glasses or contact lenses, special optical aids (e.g. telescopic and microscopic devices), exercises, or changes in working conditions (e.g. improved lighting)
- check glasses and contact lenses for accuracy and comfort and advise patients on how they should be worn and cared for
- examine patients for manifestations of a number of eye and systemic conditions, including glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure and multiple sclerosis, referring patients to appropriate specialist medical practitioners
- manage some eye conditions and prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat eye conditions, or refer patients to specialist medical practitioners such as ophthalmologists when eye diseases are detected and medical or surgical treatment is required
- give advice on the application of visual standards and contribute to industrial safety programs.
Most optometrists are in daily contact with members of the public on a one-to-one basis.
