Education and Training:

You can work as a human resources officer without formal qualifications, but employers usually prefer your VCE. However, entry to this occupation may be improved if you have qualifications in human resources. Relevant courses are available at the certificate, diploma and degree levels. A degree in related areas such as industrial relations, psychology, management, commerce or economics may also be useful in gaining employment.

Entry to the certificate and diploma courses below usually requires Year 12. To get into the degree courses you usually need to gain your VCE. The various institutions have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements. Courses are also offered via distance education. The Recruitment and Consulting Services Association offers courses at certificate and diploma levels. The Australian Human Resources Institute also runs courses at certificate and diploma levels. Contact the institutions for further information.

Most universities in Victoria offer degrees in business or commerce with a major in human resource management. Contact your preferred institution for further details.

Human resources officers are employed by organisations such as banks, insurance companies, hospitals, manufacturing firms, airline and shipping companies, large retail stores, and federal and state government departments and agencies.

Some people may establish their own businesses as human resources/personnel consultants.
