Indigenous Community Liaison Officer (SA)

State/Territory Specific Information

Education and Training:

Indigenous community liaison officers are known as community constables in SA.

You can work as a community constable without formal qualifications, but employers usually require at least Year 10. Applicants must undertake specific police force training, which can vary in duration according to whether you undertake an urban or traditional placement.

Community constables are sworn in after 12 weeks of training and continue with on-the-job training. Traditional community constables receive two weeks of initial training with continued on-the-job training. Traditional community constables need to be members of the community and be nominated by the community in either the Pitjantjatjara or Yalata lands and pass a police selection process.

Additional Information:

Positions for the urban community constables are advertised in the Adelaide Advertiser as well as the local papers. Short-listed applicants are interviewed by a police selection panel.

People from within the Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander community are encouraged to become community constables.
