Indigenous Community Liaison Officer (NT)

Education and Training:

Indigenous community liaison officers are known as Aboriginal community police officers in the NT. You can work as an Aboriginal community police officer without formal qualifications.

Once you are employed you will receive some training, both on and off the job.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and are required to meet specific police selection criteria, including medical and fitness requirements. Applications are handled by the Northern Territory Police Force. Contact the Police Recruitment Officer or visit the website to obtain an application form.

You can also become a community police officer through a traineeship in Public Safety (Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island Community Policing). Entry requirements may vary but employers usually require Year 10. Ask your career adviser about the possibility of starting some of this training in school.

Additional Information:

People from within the Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander community are encouraged to become Aboriginal community police officers. Applicants are required to have good standing within their community and knowledge of Aboriginal culture.

The demand for Aboriginal community police officers is growing and is dependent on the existence of police and community funded initiatives.

The Northern Territory Aboriginal Community Police Officer Scheme is a partnership arrangement between the Northern Territory Police Force and Aboriginal communities to improve Aboriginal representation in the police force.

Aboriginal community police officers play a central role in policing because the NT has a significant population of Indigenous people. Most of the Aboriginal community police officers are employed in remote communities.
