Fisheries Officer (QLD)
Education and Training:
To become a fisheries officer in Queensland you usually have to complete a VET qualification in seafood industry, specialising in fisheries compliance, or a VET qualification in applied science, specialising in marine resources. You may also be required to attend an interview. As subject and prerequisites can vary between institutions, you should contact your chosen institution for further information.
Once you are employed with Primary Industries and Fisheries you usually have to complete an In-Service Training Course over a period of 8.5 months. Appointees are on probation for a period of nine months from the date of appointment.
You can also become a fisheries officer through a traineeship in Seafood Industry (Fisheries Compliance). Entry requirements may vary but employers usually require Year 10. Ask your career adviser about the possibility of starting some of this training in school.
Additional Information:
An open manual drivers licence and a Recreational Ship Masters Licence or equivalent are essential. Applicants must pass a physical medical examination and provide a relevant medical history. Field officers must obtain a Coxswains Certificate issued by Maritime Safety Queensland within 18 months of commencing employment. Applicants will also be required to undergo psychometric testing, theoretical and practical assessments and an interview. Applicants who are recommended for appointment will also have to pass a criminal history check.

Employment Opportunities:
Entry to this occupation is very competitive. With experience and further training, fisheries officers may move into professional science positions or into general management. Positions are advertised in local newspapers. Officers performing duties on behalf of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority may be required to perform duties anywhere in Australia.
