Fisheries Officer (NT)
Education and Training:
To become a fisheries officer in the NT, applicants must first become qualified police officers. To become a police officer, applicants are required to be at least 18 years of age and have gained their NTCET. Applicants must possess a current provisional or open manual drivers licence. Applicants will also be required to pass an initial examination and medical and fitness tests. NT Police provides a recruitment and induction training course for successful fisheries officer applicants. Further training is provided on the job.
Entry to this occupation may be improved if you have formal qualifications and/or relevant experience in the fishing, aquaculture or agriculture industries. Knowledge of state, territory and federal government fisheries legislation and of various species management plans is desirable.

Employment Opportunities:
Fisheries officers are employed by the NT Water Police. Entry to this occupation is very competitive. With experience and further training, fisheries officers may move into professional science positions or into general management. Positions are advertised in local newspapers. Officers performing duties on behalf of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority may be required to perform duties anywhere in Australia.
