Car Driver (TAS)
Education and Training:
You can work as a car driver without formal qualifications but you will need to obtain a specific licence.
Driver Safety Services provides a taxi training course for holders of a current C-class (car) licence. On successful completion of this course, drivers receive a certificate and are issued a taxi licence.
To drive a hire car you will need to hold a current C-class licence and sit a theory test. On passing, you will be issued a Licensed Passenger Vehicle Certificate.
Additional Information:
Before applying for either a taxi or hire car licence, you will need to supply a national police character check, undergo a medical test and meet minimum age requirements. You must have held a drivers licence for two out of the previous three years if you are 20 years of age or younger. If you are 21 years or older you need to have held a licence for one year of the previous three years. If you have an equivalent taxi or hire car licence from another state or territory, you will not have to reapply for a licence in Tasmania.

Employment Opportunities:
Taxi drivers may work for taxi management companies or for themselves, using their own car or a car owned by a company. Taxi drivers usually pay the taxi owner/operator a rental that is calculated as a percentage of the fares received.
Chauffeurs/hire car drivers work for government departments, hotels and private hire car companies. Self-employed chauffeur/hire car drivers are often subcontracted to private companies.
