Education and Training:

You can work as an accounts clerk without formal qualifications. You will probably get some informal training on the job. Entry to this occupation may be improved if you have qualifications. You may like to consider a VET qualification in business, financial services, bookkeeping, accounts administration or accounting. As subjects and prerequisites can vary between institutions, you should contact your chosen institution for further information. You may be able to study through distance education.

You can also become an accounts clerk through a traineeship in Accounts Administration or Financial Services (Accounts Clerical). Entry requirements may vary but employers usually require Year 10. Ask your career adviser about the possibility of starting some of this training in school.

Once you are employed, you may be able to develop, and have recognised, additional skills under the Financial Services Training Package that will expand your career opportunities within this industry.

To work as a BAS agent or tax agent, you must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board and you must meet minimum requirements for education and experience. See www.tpb.gov.au for more information about qualification and experience requirements for registration.

Accounts clerks are employed in a wide range of industries including finance, property, business services, manufacturing and government. Job opportunities depend on the state of the economy, the growth of new businesses and the level of computerisation of financial procedures.

Part-time, temporary and contract employment is becoming more common. Competition for some positions may be strong.
