State/Territory Specific Information

Education and Training:

To become an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander health worker you usually have to complete a VET qualification in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander primary health care. As subjects and prerequisites can vary between institutions, you should contact your chosen institution for further information. You may be able to study through distance education.

You can also become an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander health worker through a traineeship in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care. Entry requirements may vary but employers usually require Year 10. Ask your career adviser about the possibility of starting some of this training in school.

Applicants must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

In July 2010, a new National Registration and Accreditation Scheme came into effect for a number of health occupations. From July 2012, four new health professions, including Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander health workers, are due to join this scheme. This new national system will replace the existing state-based registration requirements. Employment Opportunities:

Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander health workers are employed in hospitals and other health services in metropolitan and rural areas. They work in healthcare teams with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Demand for Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander health workers depends on the level of government funding and the use of health services by Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander people.

With experience, and sometimes further training, Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander health workers may take on management responsibilities.
