Police Officer - State (WA)

State/Territory Specific Information

Education and Training:

To become a police officer in Western Australia you usually have to complete Year 10, although police entrance evaluation is based on Year 12 competency in numeracy, literary and reasoning skills.

Applicants must pass stringent character and integrity checks, as well as educational, physical, psychological, medical and other job-related testing. Recruits then complete a 26-week course at the Police Academy in Perth. Graduation from the academy is followed by an 18-month probationary period. During this period, new graduates must complete specified study units and maintain operational physical, psychological and medical fitness. Successful completion of the probationary period usually results in the attainment of permanent status.

The WA Police Cadet Traineeship Program offers underage applicants the opportunity of an early pathway into the WA Police, allowing applicants between 16 and 18 years of age the opportunity to join the police force. It should be emphasised that Cadets (Traineeship) are not police officers and will not undertake operational police work.

Applicants apply during their Year 12 level of schooling in WA or equivalent elsewhere and if successful, commence the program in February of the following year. Visit www.stepforward.wa.gov.au for more information.
