Education and Training:

To become a police officer in South Australia you usually have to gain your SACE. Entry to this occupation may be improved if you have tertiary qualifications. Most institutions in Australia offer relevant courses. Institutions have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements or offer external study. Contact Open Universities Australia or the institutions you are interested in for more information as requirements may change.

The selection process consists of an entrance examination, panel interview, medical examination; and physical, agility, psychological and computer skills testing. All police recruits undergo a 29-week training program at the South Australian Police Academy. A 15-month probationary period follows graduation.

You will also need to have:

  • a C class full or provisional drivers licence
  • a typing speed of 26 wpm with 96 per cent accuracy
  • a recognised first aid certificate
  • Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.
