Police Officer - State (QLD)
Education and Training:
To become a police officer in Queensland you usually have to complete a VET qualification or at least three semesters of a degree at university. Suggested study areas are listed on www.policerecruit.com.au. To get into these courses you usually need to gain your QCE. Most institutions in Australia offer relevant courses. Institutions have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements or offer external study. Contact Open Universities Australia or the institutions you are interested in for more information as requirements may change.
Applicants who have substantial employment experience, voluntary or unpaid work, and have completed at least 200 hours of tertiary study, may be assessed as meeting the minimum criteria.
Shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake written psychometric (intelligence) tests and undergo a health screening process consisting of a medical examination and a physical competency test. Applicants are also interviewed by a recruit interview panel and subject to community background enquiries.
Recruits undertake the 30-week Police Recruit Operational Vocational Education (PROVE) program at the Queensland Police Service Academy in Brisbane or Townsville. Upon successful completion of the PROVE program, recruits are appointed as constables in the Queensland Police Service. This is followed by the First Year Constable Program, which is operationally based and conducted on the job.
