Police Officer - State (NT)
Education and Training:
To become a Northern Territory police constable you usually have to gain your NTCET or equivalent, have completed a trade certificate or have considerable life and work experience.
Selection begins with a physical, academic and psychological test. These tests are conducted in Darwin, Alice Springs and selected capital cities where sufficient numbers of applications are received. Successful candidates will be invited to an interview with the selection panel. Applicants must also meet police integrity and medical standards before an offer of employment can be made.
All recruit training is undertaken in Darwin at the Police, Fire, and Emergency Services College. The recruit induction training includes instruction in topics covering law, police practices and procedures, as well as physical fitness, firearms, driving and defensive tactics.

You will also need to have:
- a Senior First Aid Certificate
- a current manual vehicle drivers licence
- the ability to swim 200 metres unaided
- demonstrated computer competency.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Employment Opportunities:
Recruitment is highly competitive. Advancement to constable first class after 4 years of service and senior constable after 10 years of service is automatic, subject to satisfactory efficiency. Faster promotion is possible, based on merit and successful completion of promotional courses.
