Human Resources Officer (QLD)
Education and Training:
You can work as a human resources officer without formal qualifications, but employers usually prefer you to gain your QCE. Entry to this occupation may be improved if you have qualifications. You may like to consider a VET qualification in human resources or human resources management. As subjects and prerequisites can vary between institutions, you should contact your chosen institution for further information. You may be able to study through distance education.
The Recruitment and Consulting Services Association offers VET qualifications in human resources. The Australian Human Resources Institute also runs tertiary courses. Contact the institutions for further information.
You can also become a human resources officer through a traineeship in Human Resources. Entry requirements may vary but employers usually require Year 10. Ask your career adviser about the possibility of starting some of this training in school.
Alternatively, you can become a human resources officer by completing a business or commerce degree at university with a major in human resources management. To get into these courses you usually need to gain your QCE. Prerequisite subjects, or assumed knowledge, in one or more of English and mathematics are normally required. Universities have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements or offer external study. A degree in a related area such as industrial relations, psychology, management or economics may also be useful in gaining employment.

Human resources officers are employed by organisations such as banks, insurance companies, hospitals, manufacturing firms, airline and shipping companies, large retail stores and federal and state or territory government departments and agencies.
Some people may establish their own businesses as human resources or personnel consultants.
