Car Driver (NT)

Education and Training:

You can work as a car driver without formal qualifications but you will need to obtain a specific licence.

A number of training providers have taxi driver training courses for holders of a current C-class (car) licence. On successful completion of this course, drivers receive a Certificate of Attainment and are issued an H-endorsement and a Commercial Passenger Vehicle Identity (CPVID) ID card. To drive a hire car, you will need to hold a current C-class licence and sit a theory test. On passing, you will be issued an H-endorsement and an ID card. Contact the Motor Vehicle Registry for details.

Additional Information:

Before applying for either a taxi or hire car licence, you must be at least 21 years of age and have held an open drivers licence for a minimum of two years. You must also provide a police clearance with criminal check to the Motor Vehicle Registry and undergo a medical test.

Employment Opportunities:

Chauffeurs/hire car drivers work for government departments, hotels and private hire car companies. Self-employed chauffeur/hire car drivers are often subcontracted to private companies.

Taxi drivers work for taxi companies or for themselves. Most taxi owners drive their own taxis and have drivers who work other available shifts. Taxi drivers usually pay the taxi owner a rental, which is calculated as a percentage of the fares received.
